Unit 3: Density and Buoyancy Collaborative Wiki

This unit will focus on Density and buoyancy. We will be measuring mass, volume, and calculating Density of objects that are regular and irregular shape using the Density Equations:

  • Density = Mass ÷ Volume
  • Mass = Density x Volume
  • Volume = Mass ÷Density

We will also be measuring the buoyancy of objects and predicting if the object will sink or float. The culminating project will be the boat project.

Wiki Requirements:

1. Front Page:

  • A Title
  • A couple of pictures
  • A description of the Unit 3 Wiki (at least 3 sentences)- DO NOT just copy and paste what I have written above.
  • The name of everyone in your group - Only your first name

  • Standards covered in this Unit - You can just copy and paste the standards from this page into your wiki

2. Side Bar:

  • Copy and Paste the ENTIRE Side Bar from Mr. Ozeni's Unit 3 Wiki, which includes the "Table of Contents" and the "Quick Links" into your group's side bar
  • Remember, every page in your Wiki should be one click away so make sure to to link all of your Google Documents.

8th Grade Science Standards Covered:

All objects experience a buoyant force when immersed in a fluid. As a basis for understanding this concept:

  1. Students know density is mass per unit volume.
  2. Students know how to calculate the density of substances (regular and irregular solids and liquids) from measurements of mass and volume.
  3. Students know the buoyant force on an object in a fluid is an upward force equal to the weight of the fluid the object has displaced.
  4. Students know how to predict whether an object will float or sink.
